Gary Syman

Retired Goldman Sachs Partner

Gary Syman is an American businessman and retired partner of Goldman Sachs, who has devoted substantial time to civic, philanthropic and community causes, principally focused on education and education reform with an interest in the role of technology. He is a recognized strategic advisor and an active board member. Mr. Syman was past board member and is the current Board Chair of SeaChange Capital Partners. He is also a past board member of the Pearson Charitable Foundation and The New Teacher Center. He was a past board member and National Board Chair for Jumpstart, and Jumpstart's Western Regional Board. In 1968, Mr. Syman joined Goldman, Sachs & Co. in the Los Angeles office, moving to the Equity Capital Markets Group in New York in 1985. He then co-managed the firm’s New York-based Institutional Sales. In 1992, he moved to Tokyo and with another Partner, co-headed the Tokyo-based Equities Division and the Global Japanese Equity businesses, with centers in London and New York. In 1996 Mr. Synman became the Equity Division Partner and Regional Manager, in San Francisco where he continued the expansion of the firm’s private banking business in the region by spearheading several growth initiatives, including the opening of the Silicon Valley office in Menlo Park. In 2000 Mr. Syman retired from Goldman Sachs. Gary Syman holds both a B.S. and an M.B.A. from the University of Southern California. He currently lives in Northern California and is married with five daughters.
